Cdv; 4 x 2 ½, image of Union Capt Samuel Steele Sample. Name printed in image (not pen manuscript) . Thayer , Perry NY photographer’s imprint.
Residence Keokuk IA; 20 years old.
Enlisted on 6/24/1861 as a Private.
On 7/15/1861 he mustered into "G" Co. IA 5th Infantry
He was Mustered Out on 7/30/1864 at Chattanooga, TN
(Subsequent service in US Army Signal Corp from 06/13/18/98  to 01/09/1899)
He was listed as:* Wounded 9/19/1862 Iuka, MS (Flesh wound in leg)
Promotions:* 1st Lieut 2/1/1862
* Capt 3/3/1863 (In Signal Corps, Declined appointment)
Image has small piece missing from bottom left edge, and to a lesser extent along b/r edge. Image is a slightly lifting along edge. Mount has some minor damage along top edge. The name Mary Bailey on back along with orange revenue stamp.
