Dear colleagues, I present to you a model of our first Soviet Nuclear submarine project 627 "kit" (in NATO terminology - November class) K-3 "Lenin Komsomol", belonging to the 1st generation of submarines. Produced by the domestic company Flagman, 1/350 scale.
Historical information:
The lead ship, K-3 "Lenin Komsomol", belonged to the project 627, and all subsequent ones were built according to the modified project 627A. In total, from 1957 to 1963, 13 submarines entered service in the Northern and Pacific fleets. As a result of creation of nuclear submarines of the project 627 the USSR became the second power in the world having nuclear submarine fleet. The ships of project 627-627A had outstanding characteristics for their time, but also had significant shortcomings, which were corrected in subsequent projects. The main ones were related to the low reliability of the equipment of the nuclear power plant of the boat.
Designed submarine Leningrad SKB-143 (later known as PCB "malachite"). The chief designer of the project was VN Peregudov. The boat was laid down on September 24, 1955 in Severodvinsk, at plant No. 402 (now "Sevmash"), factory No. 254. Reactors launched in September 1957, launched on October 9, 1957. Entered into operation (raised the flag of the Navy) July 1, 1958, July 4, 1958 for the first time in the USSR gave the course under the nuclear power plant, December 17, 1958 adopted by the industry under the guarantee of elimination of deficiencies.
In contrast to the "Nautilus" (the first submarine in the US Navy), which had a traditional stem shape of the nose, the project 627 received a more optimized for underwater travel rounded ellipsoid shape of the nose tip. For most of the length, the hull was cylindrical with a small streamlined conning tower, a thickening to accommodate the gas in the bow and a pronounced tail. Two screws were located in a horizontal plane.
Initially, the main caliber of project 627 was to be a thermonuclear "Tsar-torpedo" T-15, supplemented by two aft torpedo tubes of 533 mm caliber without spare torpedoes for self-defense. The Ministry of Defense rejected such a project. The main armament of the project 627 and 627a submarines were 8 bow torpedo tubes caliber 533 mm. Ammunition consisted of 20 torpedoes, boats could carry torpedoes of all existing types, including special munitions with nuclear warheads. In the usual ammunition from 20 torpedoes 6 were with nuclear charges. In this project, for the first time in the USSR, the possibility of shooting from depths up to 100 meters was realized.
In 1961-the first combat service in the Atlantic ocean. In July 1962, for the first time in the history of the Soviet Navy, she made a long trek under the ice of the Arctic ocean, during which she twice passed the point of the North pole. In August 1967, while returning from combat duty, a fire broke out on Board a boat in the Norwegian sea, caused by a hydraulic fire. The accident killed 39 submariners. In 1991, she was withdrawn from the Northern fleet. According to the decree of the government of the Russian Federation the first Soviet nuclear submarine K-3 "Lenin Komsomol" project 627 should be converted into a Museum. In KB "malachite" developed a project of conversion into a floating Museum, but it never happened ...
Comparative assessment of (prototype):
The main competitors of project 627 (A) were the first projects of atomarin USA: "Nautilus", "Skate", "Skipjack". Compared with the earlier built "Nautilus" and "Skate" (1955-1958 years) project 627 had a number of undeniable advantages in speed, armament, depth of immersion, and compared with the boats built at the same time class "Skipjack", boats 627 project were larger, not inferior in speed, were still better armed, superior in size, but had a higher noise.
Pleasant viewing!
